Dr. Richard Nichols is a Consulting Engineer who helped draft environmental laws in gasoline marketing and a 30 year residential activist who has participated in Newport Beach community efforts.

Dr Nichols in his youth, was active in sports and lettered in football under Parsegian and Agase at Northwestern. Besides playing, he graduated with a B.S. in Engineering Science, and continued at Northwestern earning a M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Nichols worked initially in aerospace and new product development engineering gradually becoming a new product inventor in the aerospace, aircraft and the fuel marketing industry. Dr. Nichols holds patents in fuel tank inerting and vapor recovery.

Dr. Nichols, and his firm, R.A. Nichols Engineering (www.RANEng.com) has been involved professionally for over 25 years in developing air pollution rules and equipment for the petroleum industry. We have worked for the EPA, the SC AQMD, individual and groups of Oil Companies, the API, and in Canada with PACE.

During this time, Dr. Nichols and his wife Sandy have raised a daughter and two sons in Newport Beach. Both Sandy and Dr. Nichols have been active in the entire gambit of youth programs from Co-op nurseries up. We participated in Boy, Girl and Sea Scouts, Indian Guides and Maidens, YMCA and Club swimming. Dr. Nichols coached AYSO soccer (4-5 years), All-American football (4 years), and CdM Frosh football (3 years).

Dr. Nichols is current acting President of the Corona del Mar Community Association, and has served on SPON's Steering Committee. He recruited and Sandy served as treasurer for former Mayor Phil Sansone, in his first election. Dick has been involved in additional Initiative, Referendum, Council, and School Board elections. Dick and his wife have been involved in the California Republican Assembly. Dick has been a CdMRA, multi-term President and CRA Senate Director.

Dr. Nichols is committed to providing true representation for the residents. His many community activities have convinced him that the public is not being adequately heard and he pledges to insure that they are.

Traffic is a problem everywhere and must be addressed by tightening the recently weakened traffic phasing ordinance and not permitting over-development to make the situation worse.

The General Plan represents our zoning in planned community Areas. Current development rights should be honored but additional growth should benefit the whole community instead of depriving residents of their quality of life. In the same way, zoning variances should be the exception rather than the rule.

John Wayne Airport will reach its capacity under the currently proposed extension agreement. Flight numbers must not be permitted to increase further. Alternate airports and/or transportation systems to current airports need to be developed.

I am endorsed by Greenlight and am a supporter of their approach to maintaining the quality of life of the residents and preserving the environmental character of Newport Beach.
